Ldr circuit

The working principle of an LDR is photoconductivity, which is nothing but an optical phenomenon. When the light is absorbed by the material then the conductivity of the material enhances. When the light falls on the LDR, then the electrons in the valence band of the material are eager to the conduction band.

What is LDR what is its purpose?

Photoresistors, also known as light dependent resistors (LDR), are light sensitive devices most often used to indicate the presence or absence of light, or to measure the light intensity.

What are LDR resistors used for?

These VDRs are useful for a wide variety of applications that can include: Telephone and other communication line protection. Radio communication equipment transient suppression. Surge protector power strips.

What is the range of LDR?

An LDR's resistance, RLDR can vary from about 100Ω in the sun light, to over 10MΩ in absolute darkness with this variation of resistance being converted into a voltage variation at VOUT as shown. One simple use of a Light Dependent Resistor, is as a light sensitive switch as shown below.

What is LDR formula?

The loan-to-deposit ratio is used to assess a bank's liquidity by comparing a bank's total loans to its total deposits for the same period. To calculate the loan-to-deposit ratio, divide a bank's total amount of loans by the total amount of deposits for the same period.

Why is it called LDR?

A long-distance relationship (LDR) or long-distance romantic relationship (LDRR) is an intimate relationship between partners who are geographically separated from one another. Partners in LDRs face geographic separation and lack of face-to-face contact.

What material is used in LDR?

The LDRs made with photosensitive semiconductor materials like Cadmium Sulphides (CdS), lead sulfide, lead selenide, indium antimonide or cadmium selenide and they are placed in Zig-Zag shape as you can see in the pic below, and two metal contacts are placed on both ends of the Zig-Zag shape these metal contacts helps

Why LDR is used in street lights?

LDR sensor is used for detecting the presence of surrounding light so that during the day time when sun is bright, the street light is switched off automatically. During the night time when there is no light, the LDR sends signal to microcontroller to turn on the street light.

Is LDR passive or active?

A photoresistor (also known as a Photocell, or light-dependent resistor, LDR, or photo-conductive cell) is a passive component that decreases resistance with respect to receiving luminosity (light) on the component's sensitive surface.

What is the unit of LDR?

A Light Dependent Resistor(LDR) changes its value with intensity of light in its surroundings. “Candela” is the unit of Luminous Intensity, However the at the output end we receive some analog values. These values are “Relative” and have no units. They just give an idea so that we can compare light and dark.

What is output of LDR?

The LDR gives out an analog voltage when connected to VCC (5V), which varies in magnitude in direct proportion to the input light intensity on it. That is, the greater the intensity of light, the greater the corresponding voltage from the LDR will be.

Is LDR a diode?

(A photo diode and a photocell (LDR) are not the same, a photo-diode is a pn junction semiconductor device that converts light to electricity, whereas a photocell is a passive device, there is no pn junction in this nor it “converts” light to electricity).

What are the types of LDR?

According to the spectral characteristics of LDRs, there are three types of LDRs: - Ultraviolet LDR: more active to ultraviolet light, including cadmium sulfide, cadmium selenide LDR, etc., used for UV exploration. - Infrared LDR: Lead sulfide, lead telluride and lead selenide are the main ones.

What happens when light falls on LDR?

Light dependent resistor works on principle of photo conductivity. When light falls i.e. photons fall on this, electrons get energized and occupy conduction band escaping from valance band. These electrons in conduction band increase conductivity and decrease resistivity.

What are the properties of a LDR?

LDRs (light-dependent resistors) are used to detect light levels, for example, in automatic security lights. Their resistance decreases as the light intensity increases: in the dark and at low light levels, the resistance of an LDR is high and little current can flow through it.

Which semiconductor is used in LDR?

As explained above, the main component for the construction of LDR is cadmium sulphide (CdS), which is used as the photoconductor and contains no or very few electrons when not illuminated.

What is the difference between LDR and LED?

LED is an output device, this generates light when current flows through it. LDR is a light sensitive resistor, which changes resistance according to the light intensity. It is mainly used for sensing purpose. Overall LED is a semiconductor, LDR is a resistor.

How can LDR be used as a switch?

LDR switch circuit diagrams The relay on when LDR uncoverd and relay off when LDR covered. Adjust VR1 for light sensitive. LED will turn on at the same time with relay. This is the circuit diagram of a light activated switch based on National Semiconductors comparator IC LM 311 and a LDR.

Is LDR analog or digital?

Since an LDR is an analog component, it absorbs light and converts it into an analog value that lies between 0-255.

Is LDR a conductor?

Light-dependent resistor (LDR) is a non-ohmic conductor. This means that in a non-ohmic conductor the resistance is not constant as the voltage(potential difference) and the current are not directly proportional. LDR's or Light Dependent Resistors are very useful especially in light/dark sensor circuits.
